You need to know right off the top that this isn’t your typical survival book. If you want to learn basic skills such as firemaking, shelter building, and map-and-compass reading, there are many good books on the market that will serve you much better than this one. Here we focus on long-term survival. Many of the short-term survival skills commonly taught are largely inconsequential in a long-term survival situation. In fact focusing on them could end up killing you.
Next, you need to know that in a survival situation, fancy baskets and nicely fluted arrowheads aren’t going to save you. Native people produce such items for trade and ceremony—their everyday items are quite utilitarian looking. They devote their energy instead on comfort. Being stressed and miserable is going to defeat you much faster than not having perfected any particular skill. The focus here is on skills that bring you comfort, because then you’ll have the energy and clarity of mind make it for the long haul.
